They all get interviewed by a news program and they prepare for the mock toudai exam – but all in all this felt like a pointless episode where shit all happened.

Well well well well well. This was a filler episode if I’ve ever seen one. “Look ma, we’re on TV”. And what the hell was the point of the scene in Sakuragi’s house/office?

The lead up to the mock exam had something going for it, but of course we have to wait til next episode for that. I liked the fact that Sakuragi, Ino, et al were anxious for the kids.

Umm… the next episode looks good.

Nothing happened!!!

Yeah, this review almost seems like a filler review, doesn’t it…

Sakuragi and Ino go head to head to see who has the best English teaching method – learning through song or learning through grammar. We all know who wins…

lol@ the Director working as a night guard. Totally random. Yes, she is so irritating, but I love randomness. Randomness is good. It makes this show more entertaining.

This episode was a great episode. My heart does have a soft spot for English. It gave me some things to think about – in particular my own learning techniques and also the techniques I’m employing on this site. I hope I can improve this site because of this. My own idea of successful learning would include both methods – I need to know how a language works but I also need the fun side as well (as things can easily be learnt when you are having fun – I learn a lot of vocab by watching Japanese Dramas for instance!). Also, check back in a couple of days or so for something totally inspired by this episode.

Oh, and I love the Japanese speaking English. (huge fetish of mine!) OK, OK, so these guys are way better at English than I am at Japanese. I think I should definitely get up and sing to some Japanese music. It’d be good exercise too.

Love anything to do with Japanese and English.

… Actually, not sure there was anything I was disappointed with in this episode.

Over all, a good episode.

Episode 5

This episode the kids are studying very hard. So when Ichiro’s dick head brother makes fun of Ryuzan’s students, Hideki has to stand up and defend himself. He’s working hard after all. Then somehow Ichiro gets injured. Of course we know that his brother has punched him – but Ichiro says he fell, and so Hideki gets blamed. Anyway, Ichiro rocks, so Sakuragi tries to convince him to join the class.

I like how the teachers do the same duster joke with Sakuragi as the students did… except it fails miserably and the teachers still laugh. And the zipper joke was funny too “Oh, mine’s undone too”. I like comedy.

Anyway, this episode was FANTASTIC because it was focused on my favourite character – Ichiro! My hero. I felt so sorry for him – no one once asked him if he was ok, after obviously being hurt. All they cared about was his brother. No wonder he is a doofus if he’s been treated that way his whole life. Ichiro is awesome. I love my doofus.

Note the bible quotes on Mizuno’s shirt. What is up wit dat?

Ichiro focused episode. Do I need to say more?!?

The school’s teachers are lame, they really are. No wonder everyone is failing.

Next episode is all about learning English. And if you know me, you know I love Japan + English!

Episode 4

Sakuragi brings in this old cram school guy “The TouDai Demon” to teach them maths. However, Yoshino cracks the shits because Yuusuke is paying a lot of attention to Mizuno and she’s jealous. Sensei Ino to the rescue – she agrees to play chicken run with a bikey gang to get Yoshino back into school. Oh, and plus there is the usual pressure of the teachers wanting Sakuragi to quit and all…

Sakuragi’s scooter is awesome. I mean, it’s sooo damn tough! An ex-bikey guy on a little scooter. Oh, and I can imagine him comming back to the school with Yanagi the TouDai Demon on the back.

This episode makes me glad that I’m not at school any more, doing maths. There is a lot I’ve forgotten which says to me – “If you don’t use it, you’ll forget”. Good tips for other things in life, like, say, learning a language. Might have to make a post about it one day.

I also like how, when watering the tree, Sakuragi seems to get more water on the poll. Oh, and was that Ino’s handkerchief in his pocket?? Ooooooh.

I’m especially looking forward to the next episode, featuring my one and only Doofus, Ichiro

Seeing Sakuragi on the bad ass scooter. Seeing Ino flying off the scooter and into the water. The “Baka” head thing, and Yuusuke’s comments.

Again, annoying teachers/head teacher/Ino’s friend.

I’m enjoying this show more and more. Next episode, I’m hoping it’ll be good

Episode 3

Four students have signed up for the class, but they need one more. Mizuno is of course who Sakuragi has in mind. But, in order to convince her mother everyone needs to get 100% on a maths test….

There really isn’t much to comment about this episode. I have to say that the show is getting better and it feels like it is moving forward a bit now. And I love the doofus, Ichiro. I may never get over how awesome Ichiro is. I hope he joins the class and gets into TouDai over his brother. I also love what the tree represents.

Ichiro! Plus the story is starting to gain momentum.

The head teacher is so annoying. I just want to skip these scenes. The other teachers are also annoying. As is the friend with the two guys she doesn’t like but wants to date.

Over all, a good episode, but nothing to write home about.

Sakuragi continues on his quest to get five students to sign up for this quest towards TouDai. But, as all the teachers think that this is a very bad idea, he decides that he will run the class himself. His first point of action is to enlist Yuusuke (the monster YamaPi becomes after he plays with lawn mowers). The easiest way? Buy him.

This episode felt like unneeded filler. Hurry up and start the class already?!?! I really think that this episode could have been combined with the first episode. There was lots of money in this episode, which makes me conclude: If Japan is really a cash based society (as demonstrated in Liar Game) then they really should strengthen their money. Australia has this wonderful idea: plastic coatings. You can try it too! Oh and it was painfully obvious who had brought the trumpet.

Overall… eh. However, next episode involves everyone living together. Ooooooh! Me wants to see that! Oh, and I vote ONE for Ichiro, my beloved doofus, into the TouDai club. Please…

(Oh, and to my beloved hard subbers – yay, my copy of this episode was much more readable. Also: In love with the random blabings during the opening. Sure it’s fun to sing along to karaoke, but random blabings are amusing. I’m wondering about your first comment and the definition of “funky”. If you mean “weird and unusual”, I can dig that. But if you mean “awesome and cool” then – I guess our tastes differ…)

Episode 1

Sakuragi Kenji is a destitute lawyer and one-time member of a motorcyle gang trying to guide failing high school students with an average score of 36 into Japan’s most prestigious educational institution, Tokyo University (Toudai).

For no other reason than Sakuragi’s personal ambition, he has advertised his intention to produce 5 successful Toudai applicants from the students of a nearly bankrupt failure of a school.

Our protagonist, Sakuragi Kenji, played by Abe Hiroshi in his first role as a high school teacher, is a must see in this summer’s new show. This third rate lawyer soon becomes the homeroom teacher for the special advanced class aiming for Toudai University entrance. Hasegawa Kyouko costars as english teacher and Sakuragi’s opponent, and Yamashita Tomohisa from NEWS and Nagasawa Masami also appear in the role of students.

A new series I’m reviewing!

Just a little note: I’m viewing this series in Hard Subs and I really hate them, and the crazy colours they use. I shouldn’t complain because people have made these subs for free… But give me plain yet so much easier to read soft subs any day.

Now that that little rant is over, let the reviewing begin. And I shall begin with YamaPi’s hair. Did he have a fight with a lawn mower? And his character Yuusuke plays the trumpet. OMG he is so bad ass.

Aragaki Yui plays such a different character in this. I guess I naively never pictured her as anything but the sweet little Umemura from My Boss My Hero.

And I love the doofus, what ever his name is. Okuno Ichirou. He is gold.

It’ll be interesting seeing YamaPi and Nagasawa Masami in this together, as they are also the stars of Proposal Daisakusen.

The little speech that Sakuragi makes at the end of this episode didn’t make much sense. Was it supposed to? He was trying to be all inspirational and get the kid’s attention but to me it contradicted itself and was shitty. But wow wee, he got the basketball into the hoop!

It was all very average, but I find many first episodes to dramas average. I found Nobuta wo Produce’s first episode average, but is now one of my favourite shows. And I’ve heard good things about this show so I’ll keep watching.
