You can learn new words that way while reinforcing grammar. I mean, you don't go up to someone and say "deodorant" do you? This way you can learn the ways words are used, in what types of sentences. As for definitions, I am trying to go Japanese, but for a lot of it I am still in english mode. Some sentences I have access to I don't have direct English translations. In these, I usually have definitions of words I might get stuck on and a little note about the grammar point I was trying to make.
