I agree with you on the loving of Ikuta Toma. And just hang on for the Ohno charisma; it comes on way heavy in later episodes of the series. As far as overacting, I can kind of see where that comes from, with the Nooooooo!'s and the howling and what-have-you. I mean, if detectives in real life did what Naoto does as far as hanging people off buildings and assaulting people in the interrogation room on vague suspicion, they would be fired in three seconds flat. I would argue that the overacting is there, but it serves a purpose in the series and Toma can pull it off. He makes it part of the character enough that it's a solidly awesome performance.

thanks for the recommendation, I do happen to be an Arashi fan so I usually watch shows that star the members, they usually turn out to be pretty good too. I'm on ep 5 of Maou now, its interesting enough to keep me watching =P

Hi! For some reason your blog popped up when I searched for a drama information (tokyo ghost trip I think?).

Concerning Maou, I can relate to the idea of being biased; by default I love Maou because I admire Ikuta Toma. Such a versatile actor! I am also beginning to really admire Ohno, for he does a very convincing two-sided villian. I look at him and think "oh dear, it is that scary little man again" even when it is just Ohno promoting a AU phone ad about low costs of phone-plans.

Is Toma overacting? I keep reading that as well, but I don't see it. His character is supposed to be that intense, right? If he acted less, it would come off as his character never feeling the effects of his one mistake in life, thus being worthy of suffering. Then we might be actively rooting for Naruse (the lawyer), instead of feeling ill-at-ease, sorry for him, and scared of him, all rolled into one confusing mess. As for Toma's character Serizawa, I think you are supposed to be caught up in the emotion of a man whose life is falling apart.

I think the point of the drama is that we start off seeing things black and white, good and bad, but as things progress, it all becomes shades of grey and we get emotionally caught up.

I can't wait to read more of your reviews about Maou. I got up to episode 5 when I was in Japan but now back in the US, I don't get my weekly Maou-drama fix!

Oh and good luck with your kanji! I am still working on level one (1-80), but I think your 600 word-level is subarashi! Ganbatte!

Yeah, I've watched the first two episodes (just watched number 2 tonight) and I have to say, it's pretty good. But, if I didn't have to work early Saturday mornings, I don't think I'd let it keep me home on a Friday night.
